Cyclone Giovanna Remains Threat to Madagascar

Feb 17, 2012; 10:04 AM ET
After wreaking havoc across Madagascar, Tropical Cyclone Giovanna continues to spin off the country's southwestern coast.
Southern Madagascar will remain at risk for locally damaging winds and flooding rain through the weekend.
Earlier this week, Giovanna roared across east-central Madagascar as it made landfall near Toamasina with 120-mph winds, equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane. At least 65 people are confirmed dead with over 11,000 homeless, according to Newstime Africa.
Friday morning, EST, the center of T.C. Giovanna was located in the southern Mozambique Channel, about 465 miles south-southwest of Antananarivo, a city in central Madagascar. Highest sustained winds were estimated to be 50 knots, or about 55 mph, with storm movement slow to the southeast.

Accuweather.com meteorologists predict that the storm will trek slowly eastward, weakening as it approaches land on the more sparsely populated southern coast of Madagascar on Sunday.
Giovanna is expected to dissipate entirely by Monday.
