A new round of severe weather is beginning as a storm system moves out of the Rocky Mountains and into the Plains.
While the northern extent of this storm brings blizzard conditions across the northern Plains, it will be the southern portion of the storm where the threat for some strong thunderstorms will reside.
"The main storm will be far to the north, detached from the deep supply of moisture coming in from the Gulf," said AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Dan Kottlowski, explaining that the threat of severe weather will be isolated.
Showers and thunderstorms were developing across portions of Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and northern Texas this afternoon. It is not out of the question that a few of these thunderstorms turn damaging with strong winds and hail before dark.
The storms will be the strongest this evening as they move across eastern Kansas, eastern Nebraska and northeastern Oklahoma and into western Missouri, southwestern Iowa and northwestern Arkansas.
In this area this evening, the storms stand the best chance of producing damaging wind gusts greater than 60 mph and large hail. A few of the strongest storms could produce a short-lived tornado.
The storms will progress eastward later tonight into Wednesday morning over western Tennessee, western Kentucky, northwestern Mississippi, southern Illinois and southern Indiana. While the storms will lose some vigor during the overnight hours, they can still be locally heavy and gusty.
By Wednesday afternoon, as the storms continue to push to the east and south, some thunderstorms from northern Mississippi and northern Alabama to eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and West Virginia may be reinvigorated by daytime heating. The main threat with these storms is expected to be damaging winds.
AccuWeather.com meteorologists are also monitoring the possibility for yet another round of severe weather late this week across the South and Ohio Valley as a new storm tracks from the southern Rockies to the Great Lakes.
