Snow, Howling Winds Continue Today

Feb 21, 2012; 5:57 AM ET
A look at the weather across the Midwest today.
A day after several inches of snow whitened parts of the Plains and winds whipped across the nation's heartland , the weather will continue to be unsettled today with gusty winds and some snow.

Snow and Wind Buffet Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Today

As an area of low pressure slides along the United States/Canadian border today, snow showers will fly from Minnesota to the northern half of Michigan.
Gusty winds to 40 mph are expected in this area as well, significantly reducing visibility in heavier bursts of snow. Travel will be treacherous across parts of the region with temperatures hovering just shy of the freezing mark.
Interstates that will be adversely impacted include I-35, I-39, I-43, I-75, I-90, and I-94. The howling winds will be strong enough to down some small trees and cause spotty power outages.
Although the snow is not expected to be steady in most places, up to an inch of fresh powder is possible. Favored lake-effect areas of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as well as central Ontario have the best shot at picking up several inches.

From Chicago to Detroit, mainly rain showers are expected, although some wet snowflakes could mix in as a cold front sweeps eastward. Any accumulation would be on grassy surfaces due to above-freezing temperatures.
The remainder of the Midwest will dry out as the day progresses with a crisp breeze. Despite being located behind the cold front, temperatures will not be that chilly compared to normal.
High temperatures will climb into the 30s and 40s across the northern Plains and Midwest. While it will feel cool with the wind, these temperatures are 5-10 degrees above average.
The warmer-than-normal conditions continue the trend of the winter and the past month. Specifically, it has been 4.7 F above average in Des Moines, Iowa, this month and 9.2 F above in International Falls, Minn.
