A storm system moving through the center of the nation will combine with warm and moist conditions today, triggering strong thunderstorms across Michigan.
The same potent disturbance that brought damaging winds and a tornado to Louisiana overnight will provide the necessary spark for thunderstorms around the Great Lakes into this evening.
Cities that could experience thunderstorms containing damaging winds later today include South Bend, Ind., as well as Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Lansing, Mich. The Chicago/Milwaukee areas will be impacted by strengthening thunderstorms during the midday.
The morning will feature rainy weather in the aforementioned locations with temperatures in the 50s. By noon, the rain is expected to push north of the region, allowing clearing skies and mild temperatures.
This "self-destructive sunshine" as it is sometimes called will help set the stage for afternoon thunderstorms.
As the warm, moist surface air interacts with cooler air aloft, storms are expected to ignite in northwestern Indiana and southwestern Michigan late this afternoon. They will rumble south and east towards into the evening hours.
The main threat will be wind gusts in excess of 55 mph although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Residents of Michigan should keep an eye to the sky this afternoon for potential severe weather.
By sunset, the storms should be nearing the Detroit area although they should begin to weaken and continue that trend overnight as they push eastward.
After this potential stormy afternoon, the weather will turn quiet and mild for the remainder of the week as the eastern two-thirds of the nation bask in unusual warmth.
