Cold air will moving into the Great Lakes and Northeast will send temperatures plummeting down to freezing by Monday night, putting the early blooming flowers and budding trees that had been taking advantage of the above-average temperatures at risk.
"The cold temperatures will reach the eastern Ohio Valley, almost all of the Great Lakes area and all of the Northeast," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jim Andrews.
Delicate plants should be covered or brought inside to prevent damage.
"There could be a patchy killing frost as far south as Maryland, Delaware and Northern Virginia with a more widespread "killing" freeze further north," Andrews said.
"This year's freakish historic warmth has put the perennial plants well ahead of schedule, even into Canada." continued Andrews. "Some ornamental and commercial plants are at risk of freeze damage that could kill blossom and affect the yield of fruit trees."
