For those living across the Pacific Northwest, especially those along the Washington and Oregon coastline, March 2012 will be remembered as an unusually wet and record-breaking March.However, most of the nation will remember March 2012 for the warmth that plastered much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation.
Last week, several bouts of energy slammed into the Pacific Northwest bringing with it hefty rain to the valleys and snow to the mountains. This rain pushed many locations across Oregon to new heights in terms of rainfall for the month of March.
With a total of 7.89 inches of rain this March, Portland, Ore., set a new all-time record rainfall for the month. The previous all-time record rainfall for the month of March was 7.52 inches set in 1957.
Records date back to 1940 at Portland International Airport. In an average year, Portland usually receives 3.68 inches of rain during March.
This is the second year in a row that the Rose City has had above-normal precipitation in the month of March.
Meanwhile in the state capital, Salem, Ore., recorded its second wettest March with 9.98 inches of rain. The record for wettest March in the state capital is 10.13 inches set in 1984.
Farther down Interstate 5 in Eugene, Ore., 9.94 inches of rain fell during the month of March, making this year the fifth all-time wettest March for the city. Normal March rainfall for Eugene is 4.99 inches. The record for the wettest March was a whopping 12.46 inches set in 1974. Records date back to 1892.
