Messy weather strikes Newfoundland

February 16, 2012 — Newfoundland is getting hit with a combination of rain, snow and freezing rain. The active weather will continue though Friday.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Thursday, warning of significant rainfall throughout the Avalon Peninsula and its surrounding areas. Rainfall and Freezing Rain warnings were also issued.
"We’re looking at freezing rain in and around Gander, with possible ice pellets mixed with fog as well," warns Brian Dillon, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "St. John's also had freezing rain Thursday, but rain is expected overnight."
Around 30-50 mm of rain is expected to fall in southern Newfoundland through Friday morning with locally higher amounts possible.
Snow is forecast for western Newfoundland and the northern Peninsula.
