Northern Plains Snowstorm May be Brewing

Feb 22, 2012; 1:00 PM ET
There is some indication that a major storm with wind and snow may crank up affecting the northern and central Plains later this weekend.
Sunday is a few days away, but we wanted to give you a heads-up on a potential, major storm situation from portions of Nebraska, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
This area has not experienced many storms with strong winds, heavy snow and blowing snow this winter.
A storm still over the northern Pacific Ocean will roll along and move onshore in the Pacific Northwest Friday night.
The storm is likely to bring another round of heavy snow and wind to the Cascades and northern Rockies spanning Friday night and Saturday. However, the storm may slow down and strengthen while traveling northeastward from the central High Plains to the Upper Midwest Sunday into Monday.
If the storm remains relatively weak, then a relatively small stripe of snow and wind is in store. However, if the storm strengthens to its full potential, then substantial drifting snow and major travel disruptions are possible over a large area.
The exact path of the storm would determine which areas will be affected the most.
In the meantime, there are other wintry precipitation events going on prior to this potential storm.

A swath of accumulating snow will stretch from northern Iowa and southern Minnesota to portions of Michigan and Ontario Thursday into Friday.

The unsettled weather pattern will bring needed moisture to portions of the northern and central Plains and the Upper Midwest.
