AccuWeather.com - Brett Anderson | A Look into Next Week

Mar 7, 2012; 2:04 PM ET
Before I get to the main topic.........
The storm that hammered parts of eastern Newfoundland with blizzard conditions and over 25 cm of snow last night and early this morning is now moving out into the North Atlantic, but as you can see by the visible satellite image below from this afternoon, the storm looks quite impressive with the classic comma shape
.

The high resolution MODIS image from this afternoon below shows snowcovered Newfoundland as the clouds from the snowstorm have pushed offshore. Plenty of sea ice over the waters north of Newfoundland.
----------
Warm air to overwhelm much of the central and eastern part of Canada and the U.S. next week....

The jet stream will retreat northward across central and eastern North America starting late this weekend and through all of next week. This will result in a very springlike pattern for central and eastern Canada and the U.S., while the cold air hangs out over Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
The GFS ensemble temperature anomaly forecast for Thursday next week (March 15) shows a large area of +20 F or +11 C temperature anomalies! Bring on Spring! Courtesy PSU Ewall.

Not to be forgotten, the west coast will turn stormier next week as a moist flow off the Pacific gets established. This should also result in more heavy snow for the western mountains of Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
In the mean time, there will be a quick two-day shot of cold air coming into eastern Canada Friday and Saturday before the next, long-duration warm-up.
Also, keep an eye on the northern sky the next few nights if it is clear as there is the chance for Aurora or northern lights.
