Snow, Icy Travel for the Rockies, Great Basin

Mar 6, 2012; 1:27 PM ET

The storm currently swinging through the West will not put down a huge amount of snow, but a small amount of snow at the wrong time will make for slippery travel.

Spotty snow will continue to roll southeastward through the Great Basin and the various ranges that make up the West into Thursday.

While the March sun effect will go to work keeping most roads wet during the middle of the day despite falling snow, motorists should be aware of developing icy road conditions during the evening, overnight and early morning hours.

In addition, we also have a push of colder air over the region the next couple of days. This means temperatures can fall sharply during the day and not necessarily just over the high country and passes. The result can be rapidly changing road conditions.

Travel with care over portions of I-15, I-70, I-80, I-84 and I-90 over the next couple of days.

Accumulations in the 1- to 3-inch zone will tend to be spotty due to the tremendous micro climates of the region.

In some cases, the snow can be very brief but hit hard with gusty winds greatly lowering the visibility. In other cases, snow will melt as it falls during the day or be mixed with rain, only to freeze at night.

In addition to the cold air and gusty winds moving through the region, we also have areas of blowing dust.
